Preface

This document is a compilation of inputs received from the IST Quads group (DG III-XIII) on specific research topics which could be covered in the first year of the IST programme. It is based on three main sources of inspiration: the formal Commission proposal for a specific programme; fiches received from an informal and preliminary enquiry amongst a targetted industrial and research audience, and background consultations performed over the past year with sector and industry actors.

Being a snapshot, it does not represent the definitive input from the Quads teams and is subject to further iterations and reworking.

Contents:

• Fiches on specific topics (draft action lines). These are sorted in the order of Key Actions, with Cross-Programme RTD Themes at the end, and represent input received from the Quads at 8^th June 1998.
  
  
• Index. This is an index of the fiches titles, approximately sorted by Key action and compared with the main bullets and action lines in the IST Specific programme. The correspondence at the action line level is not always one-to-one and this aspect needs carfeul checking.
